MINUTE 377 ARVUA rt: 10455 2.6. August 1871 34 8 April 1871 on the receipt of your despatch 2:125 of the 10th December last, I applied to the Director of Kew Gardens for a person properly qualified to undertake the duties of Superintendent of Public Gardens at Hongkong.
On Dr. Hooker's recommendation, which has confirmed my own opinion of his qualifications, I have appointed Mr Charles Ford, but in order to secure his services, I have been obliged to offer him a salary of £250, rising by an annual increase of £10 to £300 per annum. I have also authorized the Crown Agents to grant him a sum of £30 to meet the cost of his outfit.
